Mixed-Animal and Small-Animal Veterinarians
Hi Veterinary Candidate!
We are glad you are here to check us out! 😊 Whether a new student graduating, maybe considering a preceptorship with us, or looking for something different, we are looking forward to getting to know you better.
A little bit about us…
Founded in 1958, Tidewater Veterinary Hospital, LLC has grown to one of the largest mixed-animal practices in Maryland and the largest in Southern Maryland. The doctors and staff enjoy the autonomy, flexibility, benefits, full support, and the ability to pursue their strengths. We are a valued asset to our rural community and take care of it, each other, and have a work/life balance. We run our own race and cheer on all others!
The culture is organically driven and has a flavor of hometown, in a professional-casual, service-driven style of practice. We are a very busy practice where we work as a team supporting each other to learn and succeed. We have regular doctor and management meetings to address concerns and solve problems together—but, not too many meetings!
Our clients are small animal pet owners, farmers with livestock, including the Amish and Mennonite, 4-H and Pony Club members, equine sport competitors, rescues, breeders, animal control agencies and the state’s attorney. We have a large military base in the area and government contractors.
What attracted us and keeps us? The passion of the people, humble egos, current technology and equipment, renovated and expanded facilities, and the drive to do the best job for the patient and client. Furthermore, we are highly recommended and very busy because we are known to be personable and reasonable. We find our good sense of humor a perk!
The Tidewater Team consists of doctors, technicians and their director, client-care coordinators and their director, surgery coordinators, pharmacy technicians, kennel assistants, and a practice manager. Currently, we have 44 employees and several independent contractors.
The veterinarian full-time shift is currently three ten-hour days and one five-hour day during the week, plus 26 Saturdays 8am to Noon. No travel is required, except to local farm or house calls as necessary. Need more time outside of work? No worries, let’s talk and figure out how to make it work.
On a normal day, the mixed-animal veterinarian will see small and large animal patients during office hours, go on farm and/or house calls when necessary for the client, and schedule surgery and dental appointments. Some days may focus more on office appointments and other days may focus more on farm calls and surgery. Or, if you rather focus on the small animals, then you are not alone. The doctor chooses how to prioritize the appointment schedule, and will determine their client base. Actually, what is normal is how you want to define it. Let’s chat!
What do you need to feel totally rewarded?
How about excellent compensation… For our doctors, we offer salary and emergency bonus pay and end-of-year bonus and retirement contributions. Emergency fee and emergency exam fee are bonused to the doctor on call. Commissions are paid if you decide to go ProSal. Or, choose straight salary. You decide.
Think private practices don’t have good benefits? Think again! We have been a leader in the private industry and continue to improve. Medical, dental, and vision insurance, retirement Plan with Employee 401K Elective contributions, Safe Harbor and Profit Sharing Employer Contributions, paid time off, maternity/paternity leave, continuing education budget, paid license and dues, AVMA membership, PLIT Insurance, mobile phone, and automobile for business use. Relocation assistance negotiable.
Do you have concerns about getting your career started?
No problem! We have an onboarding success plan that fits to your own needs and interests. If you love the area and practice, but just want to focus on small animals, we could make that work. Or, do you have something else in mind? Let us know!
We have experienced mentors for surgeries, dentals, and the daily challenges that they can’t teach you in vet school. We know that you’re amazing, but we don’t blame you for wanting a great team to stand with you. We have been doing this a while and we are still learning and needing each other…we love to celebrate together!
If you are excited to join a very busy mixed-practice with in-hospital appointments, surgery, farm calls, house calls, and the freedom to pursue special interests, and you are self-motivated, secure, friendly, compassionate, caring, and enjoy some fun, then please reach out to us.
We are looking for candidates that are qualified to be licensed in good standing, capable and hopefully available for after-hour emergencies. The candidate should have a good work ethic, but be able to remain humble, ask questions or ask for support, and able to communicate needs.
Once a candidate is interested, we usually have a phone interview first, then meet face-to-face. Before discussing the possible terms of an offer, we want to get to know the wonderful unique you and understand what is most important to you as a veterinary professional. We will help pay for travel to visit the hospital for the face-to-face interview, just please ask for help prior to your visit.
The interview process is informal and inviting. The candidate meets all of the doctors, and spends time with the owners and a few others individually. The candidate is welcome to observe, tour the facility, and ride along on farm calls, ask questions, and visit for as little or as long as desired. The practice manager reviews the numerous full-time benefits and assists with onboarding. Team Tidewater will help you settle in and soon you will feel like Southern Maryland and Tidewater Veterinary Hospital is HOME.
Please, reach out to us, and we will be happy to answer your questions, and guide you through our application and interview process. We hope that you will LOVE it here!
Thank you from the Tidewater Team!
